Windowsのhostsとは
hostsとは、Windowsのシステムファイルの一つで、そのPC内でのみサイト名などをIPに変換するためのものです。
例えば、イントラネット内のWebサーバのIPアドレスが192.168.1.1で、サーバ名がexample.co.jpだった場合、hostsファイルの最終行に以下のような1行を追加します。

192.168.1.1 example.co.jp
これで、ブラウザからexample.co.jpという社内Webサーバが閲覧できるようになります。
hostsの設定はそのPC内でのみ有効です。

Windows Vistaの場合
Vistaの場合、セキュリティが強くなっているため、通常、hostsを編集することができません。
hostsを編集するには、まず管理者権限でログインします。
その後、エディタを特権レベルで実行する必要があります。
特権レベルにするには、エディタのショートカットなどを右クリックし、「互換性」タブを選択します。
「管理者としてこのプログラムを実行する」にチェックをいれてからエディタを起動します。
そのエディタでhostsを編集することができます。

Windows XP Professionalでhostsをコピー
Windows XP Professionalでは、hostsファイルはC:¥windows¥system32¥drivers¥etc配下に存在します。
PCセットアップなどで、あらかじめ編集してあるhostsをコピーするとアクセス権などの問題で上手くpingが通らないトラブルが生じます。
hostsはあくまでも他のPCからコピーするのではなく編集するようにするのが無難です。
